Background of the Study:
Electoral violence in Nigeria is a well-documented challenge to the country’s democracy, particularly during general elections. In Otukpo, Benue State, electoral violence has escalated over the years, undermining citizens' rights to free and fair elections. The use of violence by political parties, candidates, and their supporters during elections has led to voter intimidation, disenfranchisement, and the suppression of democratic participation (Ajayi, 2024). Such violence not only affects the outcome of elections but also erodes public trust in the political system.
Despite efforts by the government and civil society organizations to curb electoral violence, Otukpo remains a hotspot for politically motivated violence, with its negative implications on the exercise of democratic rights. This study will explore the nature of electoral violence in Otukpo, its impact on citizens’ ability to participate freely in elections, and the broader consequences for democracy in Nigeria.
